Senior Living Options
Every family's situation is different. Kristi helps you understand the full range of options in the Upstate, what each provides, who it fits, and how to compare them fairly.
Independent Living
Best fit: Active seniors who want freedom without the upkeep
Independent living communities offer apartments or cottages with meals, housekeeping, activities and transportation but little or no daily care. It's senior living at its most social: a neighborhood of peers, minus the lawn work.
What's typically included
- Maintenance free residences
- Community dining and activities
- Social calendar and clubs
- Optional support services as needs change
Assisted Living
Best fit: Seniors who need help with daily activities
Assisted living provides housing plus hands on help with bathing, dressing, medication management and mobility, delivered with respect and privacy. Care plans are personalized and adjusted as needs evolve.
What's typically included
- 24/7 staffing and personal care
- Medication management
- Three meals and snacks daily
- Housekeeping and laundry
- Social and wellness programming
Memory Care
Best fit: Those living with Alzheimer's or other dementias
Memory care is a secured, specialized environment with staff trained in dementia care, structured routines, and programming designed around cognitive abilities. Safety and dignity guide every detail.
What's typically included
- Secured, wander safe neighborhoods
- Specially trained care staff
- Structured daily programming
- Adapted dining and activities
- Family education and support
Respite Care
Best fit: Short term stays for recovery or caregiver relief
Respite stays give family caregivers a needed break or provide short term support after a hospital stay. Most communities offer flexible week to week stays when availability allows.
What's typically included
- Short term stays (days to weeks)
- Full access to community services
- A safe place during recovery
- Time to recharge for caregivers
Senior Apartments
Age restricted apartment communities with independent living at its simplest, no bundled meals or care, but often a built in community. A great fit for some budgets and lifestyles.
Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs)
Campuses that offer independent living, assisted living and skilled care on one site, so residents can transition as needs change. Often structured around an entrance fee plus monthly fees.
